Vice President Kashim Shettima has charged the Sokoto state government on its responsibilities following reports that there are plans to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.
Shettima said the Sultan must be preserved and protected because he stands as an institution representing an idea that everyone in the country need to jealously guard and project for the growth of the nation.
He stated this at the “Inaugural North West Peace and Security Summit” organised by the north-west governors’ forum in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in Katsina On Monday.
The Vice-President asked Muhammad Gobir, deputy governor of Sokoto, to protect the revered monarch because he is a much more than just the Sultan of Sokoto.
Shettima said; “In all developmental issues in this country, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, I want to use him as a point of reference to recognise and appreciate all our royal fathers present here.
“And to the deputy governor of Sokoto, I have a simple message for you, Yes, the Sultan is the Sultan of Sokoto, but he is much more than that; he represents an idea, he is an institution, that all of us in this country need to jealously guard, protect, promote, preserve and project for the growth of our nation.”
The VP’s plea came after executive director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Ishaq Akintola, raised an alarm over an alleged plot by the state government to depose the Sultan.
