Nigerian music veteran, Baba Fryo, has called out Afrobeats sensation, Ruger for not seeking permission before adopting his eye-patch style.
He said he was disappointed when he watched one of Fryo’s interviews and the ‘Bounce’ crooner claimed it was an incident involving him and a soldier that inspired him.
Fryo spoke in an interview on the ‘Hoha’ podcast, where he praised Grammy winning singer, Burna Boy for approaching the music business with a sense of order.
He faulted the perception that the self-acclaimed African Giant is a ‘craazy person’ and noted that he is someone who likes to do the right thing.
Apart from Burna, the ‘Denge Pose’ crooner, also gave kudos to Adekunle Gold and his team for reaching out to him before sampling his song.
Baba Fryo said; “Ruger didn’t take permission from me before copying my style of using eyepatch. There was a time I came across his interview on Facebook and he was claiming an incident involving him and a soldier inspired him. I was disappointed. I soliloquized, ‘Africa! Black people will never give credit to whom it is due.’
“A lot of people said Burna Boy is craazy but Burna Boy mentioned ‘Denge Pose’ [in his song] and he mentioned my name. He knew why he mentioned my name. Yet people say he is craazy. They call him an alien but he always does the right thing.
“When Adekunle Gold wanted to sample my song, his team reached out to me and I gave them permission. But some of this new generation artists, they believe that once they hit stardom, the legends before they who created the ideas they are tapping from, they wouldn’t want to say the truth so that the legends won’t benefit from their shines.”
