The National Judicial Council (NJC) has suspended Justice G.C. Aguma of the Rivers State High Court and Justice A.O. Nwabunike of the Anambra State High Court from performing judicial duties.
According to reports, the judges were suspended for one year without pay and placed on a two-year watch list. The decision was made during the NJC’s 107th meeting, held on November 13 and 14, 2024, and chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
In total, the NJC sanctioned five serving judicial officers for various acts of misconduct. Additionally, two Heads of Court were recommended for compulsory retirement over age falsification.
The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T.E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, were implicated in the falsification cases.
The NJC also reviewed the Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee’s report, which examined 30 petitions. Of these, 22 were dismissed for lacking merit, two were deemed sub judice, and six were forwarded for further investigation.
Furthermore, the Council established a committee to investigate all complaints and petitions against Hon. Justice O.A. Ojo, the Chief Judge of Osun State.
