Marcus Rashford has been excluded from Gareth Southgate’s preliminary England squad for Euro 2024.
The 26-year-old Manchester United forward has faced challenges in form this season, tallying seven goals and two assists in 33 league appearances.
Rashford participated in seven England matches earlier this season but was not selected for the game against Belgium in March. Now, he finds himself absent from Southgate’s training squad, which is expected to consist of around 30 players.
Branthwaite, a 21-year-old Everton center-back, played a crucial role in securing his team’s Premier League safety this season. Quansah, 21, and Jones, 23, who plays in midfield, helped Liverpool secure a third-place finish in the Premier League.
Wharton, 20, impressed at Crystal Palace following his move from Blackburn Rovers during the winter transfer window. His teammates Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, and Dean Henderson have also made Southgate’s preliminary squad.
Additional players selected include Chelsea center-back Levi Colwill, West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, and Brentford striker Ivan Toney. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and left-back Luke Shaw have also been included.
Mainoo, 19, participated in friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March and has made 31 appearances for Manchester United this season, scoring four goals.
Shaw, who has been sidelined with a muscle injury since February, is included despite his lack of recent playing time.
Southgate must finalize his squad of up to 26 players for the tournament in Germany by midnight on June 7.
The training squad is set to assemble on Wednesday, May 29, ahead of friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland on June 7.
England will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign with a Group C match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
