Singer and songwriter, GT Da Guitarman, has accused Nigerian artistes of displaying colonial mentality, which is why they attend foreign award shows and snub the domestic ones.
He said it is shameful that the entertainers give all their attention to The Grammys, BET and MTV awards failing to realise that they are flag bearers for Nigeria, and should represent the country.
Speaking in a recent interview, Guitarman, however, urged award organisers in the Nigerian entertainment industry to improve on the quality of their shows so it can attract home grown and foreign music stars.
The ‘Dreamer’ crooner emphasised the need for Corporate bodies to support the music industry in organising events that ‘people will remember for a lifetime.’
He also sent message to artistes saying if they do not build their home or patronise their own, how would the country and its industry grow.
GT Da Guitaman said; “Organisers of Nigerian awards need to step up their production to the point where the artistes will be forced to align with their brands. It is important for the quality to improve.
“If you are trying to host superstars, there is a lot that goes into it. Corporate bodies also need to come in and support the music industry in organising events that people will remember for a lifetime.
“As for the artistes, there is an adage that ‘a prophet is not recognised in his home’. If we do not build our home, how would we grow? If we do not patronise our own, how would anyone buy into Nigeria? The colonial mentality we display is quite shameful. I hope that someday, they (artistes) will see that they are flag bearers for Nigeria, and represent us as they should.”
