Despite United’s interest and admiration for Nagelsmann at the board level, the club ultimately decided against his appointment. According to The Telegraph, they believe that hiring Nagelsmann would have led to repeating past mistakes.
While Nagelsmann’s coaching style is respected, his preference for a specific brand of football featuring wing-backs and three at the back didn’t align with the current setup at Old Trafford. There was an acknowledgment that the team wasn’t suited to Nagelsmann’s approach, and perhaps the club wasn’t prepared for a German manager.
Instead, United will concentrate on establishing a coherent “game model” under the guidance of Jason Wilcox, the newly appointed technical director. Wilcox’s role will involve developing a system that cultivates players, both for the first team and the academy, who are tailored to play a similar style of football.
