Sound Engineer and music producer, Andre Vibez has revealed the paltry sum he used to get paid as production fee during his early days in the industry.
Andre, who featured in the third episode of the ‘Made By Us’ docuseries, said he used to charge as little as N500 to produce for artistes.
The Grammy-nominated record producer, who is the son of legendary musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo, affirmed that his father’s success and popularity, he didn’t have an easy ride to the top.
Vibez said: “When I started music; producing for people, I started by charging N500. I had my expectations when I was starting out.
“My dad [Sir Victor Uwaifo] is not the kind of person who would hold your hand and say, this is who you should know. In fact, he never introduced me to anybody.”
The producer said he got a career breakthrough after he met Mavin Records Chief Executive Officer, Don Jazzy, who later signed him to the label.
Andre Vibez produced Ayra Starr’s Rush as well as Rema and Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’, among other songs. He earned a Grammy nomination for producing ‘Rush’, which was nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammys.
Meanwhile, in another news…
Nigerian rapper, Ikechukwu Onunaku, has recounted his experience while being under the now-defunct label, MoHits Records, owned by Don Jazzy and D’Banj.
He claimed that D’anj used to pay him N50,000 for shows even though the organisers had booked him for a performance at a fee of N1.5 million.
Ikechukwu claimed during a chat with Daddy Freeze that this was the practice at Mo Hits because D’Banj’s mother was the key decision maker.
The Hip Hop artiste said the ‘koko master’ used to treat him like he was doing him a favour. He added that D’banj later increased the payment to N150,000 after obtaining permission from his mother.
The artiste turned actor further debunked claims of being involved in a physical altercation with the ‘Why Me’ hit-maker years ago.
Ikechukwu said; “When we used to go on the road, dem go pay Banga money, Banga go do like say e dey do me favour, him go give me N50k, back then I used to book like N1.5m, N1m, N2m. He increased it one time after we don fight, he increase am say ‘e talk to mummy, we go increase am to N150k’.
“Mummy is D’banj’s mum, she was part of the record label spiritually. Ask Don Jazzy, dem no dey make decisions without momsi giving the okay for a very long time.”
