The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services, Rep. Tanko Sununu has disclosed that the attack on the Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri in Kebbi State was a promise bandits made to the school.
The bandits killed a police officer before whisking the four staff and an unspecified number of students to an unknown location.
According to Rep. Tanko Sununu, the bandits raided areas bordering Zamfara, Niger, and Kebbi and made their intentions known that they were not backing down.
He said, “What really happened is that about two weeks ago, we had an episode when bandits residing within parts of the areas bordering Zamfara, Niger, and Kebbi came up through one of the villages in my constituency.
“They killed a policeman and found their way until they reached Ibeto area where we’ve a quarry, killed some security men and kidnapped some of the foreign workers in the quarry and left.
“Ten days later, they came back to the same area and entered into my constituency bordering some villages, and they had more than a seven-hour field operation going from house to house, room to room, collecting money, phones, cows, and any machine they deemed useful for their operations, and they left a message behind that they would soon be back.
“To fulfil their promise yesterday, we had intelligence that they were on their way coming. Around 10:30 am, they reached their final destination – the Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri.”
Recall that Ghgossip reported that 5 abducted students have been freed by troops following a rescue operation by the Joint Taskforce Component of Operation Hadari Daji. Sadly, one of the abducted students from Federal Government College Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State has died.
Air Commodore Abubakar AbdulKadir, Deputy Force Commander of the Joint Taskforce in the North-West Zone, told reporters that five others, including four kids and a teacher, had been rescued from their abductors.
Abdulkadir, who didn’t disclose the name of the deceased student or the circumstances surrounding his death, stated that troops came into touch with the bandits in the early hours of today, June 18, and engaged them in a gunfight forcing them to flee without five pupils and a teacher.
