GTBank Customers Frustrated by Prolonged Downtime Despite New System Upgrade

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) customers have expressed frustration over their continued inability to access banking services, despite the bank’s announcement that it had successfully transitioned to a new core banking system. The downtime, which has persisted for several days, has affected both individual and corporate customers, with many unable to use the bank’s digital platforms since the upgrade.

Corporate clients have been particularly affected, with some advising their customers to use other banks for transactions due to the ongoing disruptions. Despite GTBank’s claims of completing the transition, users continue to face challenges when accessing services.

On Monday evening, GTBank shared an update via its social media platforms, stating that the transition to the new Finacle Core Banking Application Systems had been completed. The bank also announced extended banking hours, with branches remaining open until 6 p.m. to meet customer demands. The notice read: “We have successfully transitioned—all our branches are now open till 6 pm to serve you. We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully transitioned to a new and robust suite of Finacle Core Banking Application Systems.”

This message followed an earlier announcement of branch closures and the temporary unavailability of digital services last week as part of the transition process. The bank had informed customers that its digital channels would be offline for 11 hours, from 10:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, to 9:00 AM on Monday, October 14, 2024.

GTBank is not alone in facing downtime challenges, as several Nigerian banks have recently announced disruptions in service due to both planned system upgrades and unforeseen issues with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

The impact of the glitches is being felt widely, with users taking to social media to report various issues. On Tuesday, October 15, a Thread user with the handle Baba Aminu mentioned receiving a N300,000 credit alert from an unknown source, which he attributed to the ongoing system breakdown.
