Court remands two farmers for armed robbery

A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court in Benue has ordered the remand of two farmers, Orshi Tyohemba and Johnpaul Agbanger, in the state correctional center over alleged armed robbery and abduction.

The farmers who live in Konshisha and Kwande local government areas, respectively, are being charged with criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, abduction, and acts of terrorism.

During hearing on Tuesday, the Prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Ato, told the court that the two suspects conspired with others, now at large, to abduct the complainant’s mother, Mbazan Agwaza.

He said the complainant, Mlumun Sunday, reported the matter at the Police Area Command, Gboko on April 15, leading to the arrest of Tyohemba and Agbanger.

The prosecutor further said that the defendants stole N8 million from their captive before taking her away to an unknown destination. He aded that the offences contravened Sections 6(b), 1(1)(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearm Act, 2004, 3(2).

According to him, the offences also contravened Sections 3(2) and 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult, and Similar Activities Prohibition Laws of Benue, 2017.

Chief Magistrate, Kelvin Mbanongun, did not take the defendants’ plea due to lack of jurisdiction. He adjourned the matter until August 5.
