An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Dabiet Onyemi Gilbert, has been sentenced to one year in prison for defrauding a job seeker of N800,000.
Justice H.H Kereng of the Gombe State High Court convicted him on Friday, after being arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on a one-count charge of obtaining by false pretence.
The anti-graft agency had received a petition from the victim and investigated the case, leading to the prosecution and conviction of the fraudster.

An Ondo Magistrate court sitting in Akure has sentenced a 21-year-old man, Victor Isaac to three years in prison for theft.
The prosecution counsel told the court that the defendant carted away a generating set valued at N500,000 at Imade street in Ijapo Estate, a highbrow axis of Akure.
He pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft and informed the court that after stealing the generator, he sold it for N9,000.
Delivering judgement, the presiding Magistrate Court, Tope Aladejana, found Isaac guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison without an option of a fine.
Counsel to the convict, Kehinde Osadugba, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy and pleaded that the convict did not give the court a tough time.
