Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, says two patients in England who are members of the same family are confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus.

The patients were staying in a hotel in Yorkshire, before being taken overnight to a specialist centre in Newcastle.

Prof Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said the NHS was “extremely well-prepared for managing infections,” and it was quickly trying to identify any close contacts the patients had to prevent further spread.

“We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately,” he added.

With the UK case, the total number of countries with reported cases is now 23: China – United States – France – Japan – South Korea – Taiwan – Singapore – Thailand – Australia – Nepal – Vietnam – Hong Kong – Macau – Malaysia – Canada – Cambodia – Sri Lanka – Germany – UAE – India – Philippines – Finland – UK.
