The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike to protest absence of governing councils in all federal universities across the country .
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke made this known at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, noting that it will also push forward other issues the Federal Government is yet to address.
The body, which said the Federal Government dissolved governing councils of the universities in May last year, has asked Nigerians to hold the government responsible for any decision it takes to protest the action of government.
The union also faulted what it described as the nonchalant attitude of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to matters pertaining to academics in Nigerian Federal Universities.
The body of academics also faulted the 35 percent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary increment for other academics in the university system.
According to ASUU, it saw the increment as a wage award that could be withdrawn by the government anytime it deems fit. Prof. Osodeke said ASUU has given the Tinubu-led government enough time to set things in motion.
Osodeke also noted that the dissolution of the governing councils was illegal as it was against the principles guiding the existing universities.
