The Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) Youth Wing has rejected calls for new leadership elections, emphasizing that its current National Coordinator, Barr. Maikano Jerry Mendos, was duly elected on February 10, 2024, for a four-year term.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Mendos reaffirmed the supremacy of SOKAPU’s constitution, calling any actions outside its provisions “null and void.”
He stated that the election that brought him to office was conducted in line with constitutional requirements, including oversight by the outgoing president, Comrade John Isaac, as mandated.
The Youth Wing also addressed a controversial letter of dissolution dated September 24, 2024, allegedly issued by a sectional leader.
According to Mendos, the letter contradicts Section 26 of the constitution, which outlines the procedure for special actions, including disciplinary measures.
Section 26 (v) stipulates that no disciplinary action can be taken against a member without the formation of a disciplinary committee and at least seven days’ written notice.
The notice must detail the allegations and provide an opportunity for defense. Mendos argued that none of these steps were followed, rendering the purported dissolution invalid.
“This unilateral action violates our constitution and is therefore null and void,” Mendos said.
He urged members to maintain decorum and continue their lawful activities under the current leadership.
Mendos acknowledged ongoing reconciliation efforts to resolve outstanding issues within the union, aiming to enhance its effectiveness.
However, he insisted that the Youth Wing’s legitimate leadership remains intact and sees no need for new elections.
