Nationwide Blackout as Nigeria’s Power Grid Collapses for the Third Time in a Week

Nigerians have once again been plunged into darkness following the collapse of the national power grid, marking the third such incident in just one week. This series of outages has further deepened frustration across the country as homes, businesses, and essential services continue to suffer from the nation’s unreliable power supply.

The latest grid collapse occurred early Saturday morning, with many states reporting widespread blackouts. Coming just days after two other collapses, this incident has placed additional strain on Nigeria’s fragile power infrastructure.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), the grid registered an alarming zero megawatts (MW) of electricity as of 8:16 am. All 22 power generation companies (GenCos) were offline at the time of this report.

This marks the eighth grid disturbance in 2024, exacerbating the long-standing challenges that have crippled Nigeria’s power sector. Despite the severity of the blackout, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not yet confirmed the cause or provided updates as of the time of this report, leaving the public and stakeholders in the dark regarding the resolution of the crisis.

Earlier this year, on February 4, Nigeria experienced its first major blackout of 2024 when the grid collapsed at around 11:51 AM, dropping from 2,407MW to a mere 31MW before completely shutting down by 1 PM.
