Chaos erupted in Amassoma community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Monday, as angry youths allegedly killed a final year student of the Niger Delta University, NDU.
The victim identified as Francis Palowei was reported to have been lynched over N150 levy at a sand dump, which residents of the community claim is a popular spot where students often go to relax, socialize and climb the height of it for fun.
An eyewitness disclosed some area boys who saw the in flock of students at the sand dump, began to ask for 150 naira levy from those that came to the spot to relax, especially tho people who wanted to climb to the top of the sand dump.
He said Francis visited the sand dump with some of his friends to climb to the top on Monday evening when some youths prevented them from doing so and demanded N500 instead of the statutory N150.
The situation led to an argument before the area boys went and called other youths including a notorious cultist, who then fatally attacked the deceased.
He said the late Francis, who is a native of Obrigbene town in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was a promising young man with a bright future ahead of him while his senseless murder has left his family, friends, and the entire University community in mourning.
Public Relations Officer at the Niger Delta University, Mr Ndoni Igezi confirmed the incident on Wednesday, and disclosed that police are already on top of the situation.
Also, Spokesman of the Bayelsa State police command, ASP Musa Muhammed, while speaking on the tragic incident in Yenagoa, said a manhunts has been launched to arrest the suspected killers.
Muhammed also said the Commissioner of Police has already deployed additional security personnel to the area to restore calm and orderliness.
