Government at all levels have been urged to set up disciplinary committees to punish erring members of the society found of mismanaging government utilities.
A veteran Journalist and head of department, Ave Maria University, Piyanko, in Karu Local government area, Dr. Richard Abu, made the assertion in an interview with news men on the importance of maintaining public Infrastructure by the citizenry.
Regular maintainance of public utilities are essential towards enhancing the safety, durability and economic value of such infrastructure for public good.
This is however the opposite and most worrisome as bridges, roads, drainages and other public structures constructed by the government are often misused and vandalized by citizens.
These nonchalant attitudes according to Dr. Richard Abu, a veteran Journalist and head of department, Ave Maria University, Piyanko, in Karu Local government area is lack of patriotism which must be checked by the government.
Dr. Richard lamented the arbitrary erection of speed bumps on the highways by residents which has often led to obstruction of movement and occasional accidents, adding that infrastructural maintenance foster smooth flow of commerce, stimulates business activities, and bolsters overall productivity.
Another resident of Loko Tiye, Mr. Tagwai Thoma, stressed the importance of regular infrastructure maintenance which enhances societal resilience and preparedness for unforeseen situations like Natural disasters, extreme weather condition or emergencies capable of causing substantial damage to the infrastructure.
Infrastructure maintenance contributes to environmental sustainability by proactively addressing issues such as leaks, cracks, or outdated systems which can minimize resource wastage and mitigate environmental impacts.
To achieve this goal, governments must ensure that projects are selected based on the needs of the people and availability of funds among others to avoid wastages and poor maintenance culture.
