My father’s wives, concubines almost killed him with stress – Seun Kuti

Grammy nominated artiste, Seun Kuti has claimed that his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s dozens of wives and concubines almost killed him with stress.

He said that apart from the 27 wives that Fela married on the same day, and his other wives before the controversial marriage, he had over 100 concubines living with him at his Kalakuta commune.

According to Seun Kuti, the stress of handling all the women overwhelmed the Afrobeat pioneer who died at the age of 58. It may be interesting to note that Fela died of AIDS-related complications in August 1997.

Speaking in a podcast, Seun said; “People only know of Fela’s 27 wives, they don’t know of his over 100 girlfriends that lived with us in the house. The wives and girlfriends almost killed Fela with stress.”

Meanwhile, this comes on the heels of the sensational musician called for the abolishment of monogamous relationships.

According to Seun, monogamy is not working and as such, polygamy should be embraced and men ought to be allowed to have multiple women.

The artiste who is married Yetunde Kuti, advanced his suggestion on the ‘Bahd & Boujee’ podcast, wherein he claimed that having multiple women demonstrates power and affluence.

Seun said; “Monogamy doesn’t work. As a powerful man, you must have the support of numerous powerful goddesses. You know, women that are in your life because the ancestors want to put them there. You share with them.”
