BREAKING: Manchester City Star, Phil Foden Wins Premier League Player Of The Season Award [PHOTO/VIDEO]—-PHIL FODEN has won Premier League Player of the Season.
It marks a stellar campaign for Foden, who has registered sixteen goals and eight assists in his 37 games so far this season.
In winning the award, he beat competition from City pal Erling Haaland, Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, and Chelsea‘s Cole Palmer.
Other nominees included Aston Villa‘s Ollie Watkins, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
It comes after Foden was also voted Football Writers Player of the Year earlier this month.
After collecting the gong, Foden said: “To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of.
“The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.
“Overall, I’ve been very happy with the way I have played this season and really pleased that I have been able to contribute with the goals and assists throughout the season.
“I’d like to thank all of the City staff, coaches and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn’t be possible.
“And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.”
The voting was made up half through a public vote on the Premier League’s website and half by a panel of football experts.
Foden has benefited by playing in a more central role for City this season, having often been played out wide by Pep Guardiola in the past.
A long-term injury on the first day of the season to Kevin De Bruyne allowed Foden to play in his more favoured ten position for much of the year, where he has thrived with 24 goal involvements.
City lead Arsenal by one point in the title race going into the final day, and need a victory to ensure they are not pipped at the last hurdle.
With the Euros just around the corner, it will be interesting to see what position Southgate plays Foden this summer.
He has traditionally played him as a winger, but may be tempted to move him further inside, as Pep has done this season.
